At least six people were killed and 16 others were injured after shots were fired in a market square in Krakow, Poland, on Saturday, according to regional police.

Three other people were found dead inside the home of the suspected shooter, according to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Preliminary findings suggest the gunman was allegedly “influenced by far-right ideology,” Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said at a press briefing on Saturday.

A man drove a car near the historic Main Market Square and began firing shots at random people at around 3 p.m. local time, according to Małopolska Police.

The incident occurred near Slawkowska Street, just off the main square.

“Initial information suggests that the shots were fired from a passing vehicle,” according to the local government.

There are 16 people in Krakow hospitals, including five foreigners; 13 were brought in as the most serious emergency cases, according to Kierwinski.

The unidentified perpetrator was shot and wounded by police and has been transported to a hospital, authorities said.

Of the six people killed, four were women and two men, according to the police. Three women were Polish, one British citizen, and two individuals who have not yet been identified.

Eleven of those injured are Polish, and five are foreign nationals, according to the police. Two officers were among the wounded, police said.

Katarzyna Cisło, a Krakow police spokesperson, told ABC News the suspect was wearing military-style camouflage clothing, though not an official military uniform, and was reportedly armed with an AR-15-style rifle.

Kierwinski said the attacker was not a soldier; he was wearing military style clothes, which anyone can buy in a shop.

Police also found a variety of different weapons and ammunition in the vehicle he had been driving, according to Cisło.

Police are also trying to find out where he got his weapons. One possibility is that he took them from his family home, where his father had several registered guns.

Counterterrorism officers searched the shooter’s home and found two women and one man dead inside, Prime Minister Tusk told reporters later in the day.

While police are investigating the case, the prime minister added that “there are strong indications that they were immediate family members.”

“It is, indeed, an extraordinary tragedy,” Tusk said.

Police commander in chief Marek Boron, added that the perpetrator and his family possessed weapons; specifically, sports firearms.

Police are also looking into whether the suspect had any links to extremist groups or was working with anyone else, according to Kierwinski.

Małopolska Police said the attacker was a Polish citizen and denied reports that a second suspect was involved.

“The only known perpetrator of the incident is in police custody,” police said.

So far, CCTV footage suggests he acted alone at the scene. They are also looking at who he was in contact with, how he travelled to Krakow and whether he had visited Krakow before, according to Kierwinski.

Two police officers are among those wounded, according to Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński.

“One officer was shot, and the other is in very critical condition—3 gunshot wounds. Surgery is underway,” Kierwiński said in a post on X.

Krakow’s mayor said the officers who stopped the attacker were seriously injured and are being treated at Narutowicz hospital

Emergency services urged people not to approach areas where police officers and rescue workers were operating, according to the Krakow municipal government.

The city has announced mourning from Sunday to Wednesday. Flags will be lowered and city events cancelled.

The minister said the situation is now under control, but police will continue working through the night. Authorities are also looking at security for Polish Independence Day events on Nov 11.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki expressed his condolences to the victims and all those affected by the attack.

“I remain in contact with the relevant services and expect a full clarification of the circumstances surrounding these dramatic events. The Head of the National Security Bureau is on his way to Kraków,” the president said.

Polish Prime Minister Tusk said he is being kept informed on the shooting, and that police are “investigating the background and all the circumstances of the attack.”

In another post on X, Tusk expressed condolences to all families and loved ones affected in the attack and praised the “heroic police officers who risked their lives.”

U.S. Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose called the “horrific” shooting “a savage and murderous attack that’s shattered the peace of Poland,” in a post on social media.

“What we know so far is that several innocent precious lives were viciously cut down on a Saturday afternoon in Kraków’s historic and iconic central square,” Rose said.

“America stands with Poland at this dark hour as Poland stands with her beloved citizens of Krakow. May the blessed memory of those lost today assuage the grief of those who mourn,” Rose said.
