TOKYO –
Tokyo’s historic Sensoji Temple in Taito Ward was transformed into a dazzling nighttime spectacle on October 30th as a projection mapping event began, bringing 1,400 years of history and culture to life across the temple’s main hall and Hozomon Gate.
The event, titled “ASAKUSA CULTURE & LIGHTS 2026,” uses large-scale digital projections to illuminate the centuries-old buildings with colorful images inspired by the temple’s rich cultural heritage.
The displays feature motifs drawn from traditional large votive plaques, the Kanbun Engi illustrated scroll depicting the temple’s origins, and ukiyo-e woodblock prints associated with Sensoji, creating a visual journey through its 1,400-year history.
The combination of traditional architecture and modern digital technology has attracted visitors eager to experience the historic temple in a different light.
A company employee in his 20s who lives in Taito Ward praised the display, saying, “The combination of historic buildings and modern technology is wonderful.”
The event ran nightly from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. through November 3rd, a national holiday in Japan, offering visitors an opportunity to experience one of Tokyo’s most famous temples illuminated by a celebration of its history and culture.
