ORLANDO, Fla. – The National Hurricane Center has upgraded Invest 97L in the northern Gulf to Potential Tropical Cyclone Five as the system moves toward the Texas and Louisiana coastline.
A Potential Tropical Cyclone is a developing system that hasn’t officially become a tropical depression or tropical storm yet, but could still bring tropical storm conditions to land. The designation allows the National Hurricane Center to start issuing forecasts, watches and warnings before the system officially develops. Should the system become a tropical storm, its name would be Edouard.
As of11:00 A.M., the system was located 130 miles south of Morgan City, Louisiana with maximum sustained winds 35 MPH. It was moving WNW at 5 MPH.
The system is expected to remain relatively short-lived, with landfall anticipated along the Upper Texas or southwestern Louisiana coast on Tuesday.
No threat to Florida
This system poses no threat to Florida. The main impacts will instead be focused along portions of the southwestern Louisiana and Upper Texas coasts, where heavy rainfall is expected during the next couple of days.
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for the northwestern Gulf Coast from Port Bolivar, Texas, to the Vermilion/Cameron Parish Line in Louisiana.
What happens next
An intermediate advisory from the National Hurricane Center is expected at 2:00 P.M. The next full advisory, including a forecast cone, will be issued at 5:00 P.M.
