Roger “Jack” Lee Bell, 81, of Salem, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, July 26, 2026. He was born on December 11, 1944, in Salem, the son of the late Lucy Bell.
Education was never simply a career for Jack—it was his life’s calling. He believed deeply in the potential of every student and worked tirelessly to ensure young people had every opportunity to succeed. Even after retirement, his passion for education continued as he faithfully served on the Doddridge County Board of Education, helping shape the future of the schools and the community he loved. His influence reached generations of students, teachers, administrators, and families whose lives were enriched by his guidance, encouragement, and vision.
Jack also devoted countless hours to athletics, serving for many years as Athletic Director while coaching both football and basketball. He understood that lessons learned on the field and court were just as valuable as those taught in the classroom, mentoring young athletes with the same dedication and care he gave his students.
When he wasn’t serving his community, Jack could almost always be found on a golf course. Golf was far more than a hobby—it was his greatest passion. His life revolved around the game he loved. Family vacations were planned around golf destinations, weekends were filled with tournaments, and some of his happiest moments were spent walking the fairways with friends and family. A member of several local golf courses throughout the years, Jack found joy, friendship, and peace every time he picked up a club. Those who knew him best knew that if he wasn’t working to improve education, he was likely talking about his next round of golf.
Jack was raised in the Indian Fork Baptist Church and remained connected to his faith throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Sharon Sue Batton Bell, whom he married on August 13, 1965, and who passed away on March 22, 2015; and by his mother, Lucy Bell.
Left to cherish his memory are his three children, Angela L. Wilt (David) of Charles Town, WV, John D. Bell (Onie) of Salem and Benjamin T. Villaraza (Neil) of Las Vegas, NV; four cherished grandchildren, Austin M. Bell, Payton McLane, Hailee Seese, and Skylar Emerson; along with many friends, former students, colleagues, and athletes who were blessed by his kindness, wisdom, and lasting influence.
A Graveside Service will be held at Mount Olive Church Cemetery, Salem, on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at 10:00 am with Pastor Roger Fontaine officiating.
