A decommissioned natural gas platform roughly 60 nautical miles south of Sand Island Lighthouse has been transformed into two artificial reef sites through a partnership between APA Corporation and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

The Spirit VK 780A rig donation adds to what officials describe as the nation’s largest artificial reef program, part of the state’s Rigs to Reefs initiative that launched in 2013, according to a news release.
