Japanese director Tomoki Misato’s stop-motion animation Candy Caries has won the Grand Prize in the children’s category for ages 7 and up at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in Canada, one of the world’s three major animation festivals.
Candy Caries is a slapstick comedy about the everyday adventures of Ame, a child who loves sweets, and Caries, a cavity that lives inside Ame’s mouth. The animated series is produced using stop-motion techniques.
The award was announced at the festival’s ceremony in Ottawa on September 26, with the production taking the top honor in the category for children aged 7 and older.
“We are extremely happy because this work represented a new challenge for us,” Misato said. “We hope this award will help introduce the appeal of Candy Caries to an even wider audience.”
Candy Caries aired on TBS’s Yoru no Brunch until September and is also available on streaming platforms including U-NEXT and YouTube.
