Key Facts
Chile’s S&P IPSA fell 0.49% to 10,966.21 on Wednesday 14 October, back below the 11,000 mark after a 0.21% fall on Tuesday.
The peso weakened 0.26% to about 985 per US dollar, as US inflation of 3.7% beat the 3.6% forecast and lifted the dollar.
SQM, the lithium producer, fell 1.89% to US$61.64 in New York, as lithium prices erased their 2026 gains, Diario Financiero reported.
Copper fell about 1% on the London Metal Exchange, while Diario Financiero said a strike at the Escondida mine might be avoided.
Prediction markets: Polymarket gives 92% that Chile’s central bank leaves its rate unchanged in October (US$10,463 traded, read at 8:25 pm ET on 14 October). Bets, not polls.
Today’s Focus
Chile’s main stock index, the S&P IPSA, fell 0.49% to 10,966.21 points on Wednesday 14 October. It slipped back below 11,000 after US inflation data.
The Chilean peso weakened to about 985 per US dollar, according to our RT feed and Diario Financiero. A stronger dollar hurts a currency tied to copper exports.
Chile’s banks held up better than the market, the newspaper said.
What matters today. Chile supplies copper and lithium to the world, so a stronger dollar and weaker metals hit both its peso and its biggest stocks, a link that matters to US holders of the ECH fund.

01 The session in one read
The IPSA lost 53.80 points to 10,966.21. It had closed at 11,020.01 on Tuesday.
The fall was led by lithium and mining-linked stocks, while banks resisted the decline, Diario Financiero reported.
Assessment — Dollar and lithium pressure MEDIUM
The fall followed global moves rather than a Chilean shock, and banks held up. SQM’s slide shows how exposed the index is to lithium prices.
The variable to watch is whether the peso holds below 990 per dollar.

03 Why it moved: a stronger dollar and weaker metals
The US consumer price index rose 0.6% in September and 3.7% over twelve months, above the 3.6% forecast, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. The dollar rose against most currencies as US yields climbed.
Copper dropped about 1% to US$6.55 a pound on the London Metal Exchange, according to Diario Financiero. SQM’s New York shares fell 1.89% as lithium prices gave up their 2026 gains.
04 Escondida and the pension funds
The newspaper said talks at BHP’s Escondida, the world’s largest copper mine, suggested a strike might be avoided. Unions at the mine had voted for strike action in late September and early October.
Separately, losses in Fund E, a bond-heavy pension option, led to meetings between the pensions regulator and the AFP fund managers. Diario Financiero tied about 80% of the losses to interest-rate swaps.
05 The regional scoreboard
Chile’s fall was in line with the region. Mexico’s IPC lost 0.26% and Brazil’s Ibovespa 0.18%, while Argentina’s Merval fell 1.2%.
On Wall Street the S&P 500 dropped 1.11% and the Nasdaq 1.88%, a weak backdrop for emerging markets.
06 The outlook
Chile’s central bank is expected to hold its rate at its October meeting, according to prediction markets. Copper and the dollar are the two variables to watch.
What it means for you: if you hold Chilean assets in dollars, a weaker peso and lower SQM shares cut returns, while a settled Escondida deal would remove a supply risk.
What Prediction Markets Say
Polymarket, a prediction market, priced 92% for no change in the Central Bank of Chile’s October decision, 5.5% for a 25-basis-point rise and 2.8% for a 25-basis-point cut, with US$10,463 traded (read at 8:25 pm ET on 14 October).
These prices are bets, not forecasts, and they can move quickly on new data.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
07 What to watch
Escondida talks: A deal would ease supply fears, while a strike would lift copper and hit output.
The peso: A move above 990 per dollar would signal stress.
Lithium: SQM’s next move depends on whether lithium prices stabilise.
US data: US retail sales on Thursday 15 October at 12:30 UTC will steer the dollar.
