Catalonia is preparing for a possible Mediterranean mini-hurricane from this evening, with forecasters warning of more than 200 litres of rain per square metre in about six hours and Civil Protection ready to ping phones with an ES-Alert.
Meteocat director Sarai Sarroca told a midday briefing on Saturday, October 3, that rain already falling “can get a lot worse” and could become “an exceptional episode”. Prediction chief Santi Segala said every model points to a mesoscale convective system, a huge organised storm complex that can behave like a mini-hurricane over the Mediterranean. That is not an Atlantic hurricane, although it can still drop torrential rain, kick up strong winds, and throw up waterspouts or tornadoes near the coast.
Regional president Salvador Illa was blunter. “This is not a joke. Watch what is coming,” he said.

Barcelona, Tarragona and Girona take the brunt
Storm cells are expected to hammer the coast and pre-coastal strip of Tarragona, Barcelona and Girona, then push into inland Girona on Sunday. Meteocat has put danger at 5 or 6 out of 6. Bursts of 40 litres in 30 minutes are possible. AEMET’s special warning for Sunday also flags Barcelona and Girona, with cells tracking south to north and totals that could top 200 millimetres in 12 hours.
Worst of the window runs from 8pm Saturday to 2pm Sunday. The ground is already soaked, so fast run-off and flash flooding is a serious threat. Ametlla de Mar has recorded about 265 litres since Thursday, and Mas de Barberans about 227, after the floods that killed a woman in Albacete and swamped southern Tarragona.

Shops, sport and non-essential trips told to stop
Civil Protection wants movement limited from this evening except for essential services and force majeure. Outdoor sport, culture and leisure should stop, as should markets, fairs and trips into parks or the countryside. Imma Sole, deputy head of Civil Protection, said crowds and journeys that are not vital should wait: “This is not the moment.”

Barcelona has switched its local plan to emergency phase and asked people to clear roofs and drains and stay out of flood-prone streets. Girona is activating its flood plan from 5pm and calling off Sunday events. An ES-Alert is due across the Catalan coast and pre-coast, Girona counties and Moianes. Southern Tarragona’s Ebro counties are left off this one after their earlier warning. Phone alerts of this kind already disrupted trains in Tarragona last week.
Balearics and Castellon still in the same wet set-up
AVISOS ROJOS | Lluvias torrenciales en zonas de Barcelona y Girona.
Se podrán superar 90 l/m² en una hora y 200 l/m² en menos de 6 horas.

AEMET is not limiting the unstable weekend to Catalonia. Strong storms can still hit the Balearic Islands, and Castellon is coming off red-alert rain that left more than 170 litres in places. Eastern Pyrenees rain may also brush Roussillon. A cut-off low west of Spain is spreading showers across the north and centre on Sunday, at lower intensity than on the Mediterranean side.
Anyone on the Catalonian coast tonight , as well as that of the north of Valencia region, should follow Proteccio Civil updates via 3Cat and AEMET rather than last night’s map. Medicanes are smaller than Atlantic hurricanes, and floodwater, not wind alone, usually does the damage.
