Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday (August 24, 2026) announced reimbursement for three domestic LPG cylinders a year for eligible homemakers under the ‘Annapoorani Super Six Scheme’, which will be launched on Pongal Day in 2027. A total of 1,30,16,104 families will benefit from the scheme, which is expected to cost the government approximately ₹4,000 crore.

The provision of six free cooking gas cylinders was one of the major electoral promises of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly polls.

Making a suo motu statement, the Chief Minister said the money for the cylinders would be credited to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries. “The government would collect the list from the oil companies after the beneficiaries receive the cylinders post registration, and credit the money to their bank accounts,” he said.

Families with an annual income not exceeding ₹2.5 lakh, middle and marginal farmers, and families of persons with disabilities are eligible for the free cylinders.

Mr. Vijay said there had been a shortage of cylinders in the last four months following the war in the West Asian region, forcing families to opt for alternative fuels. The increase in fuel prices had also eaten into family incomes. “Though the government is facing a financial crisis, it has decided to reimburse the money for gas cylinders, taking into consideration the burden on the people, their welfare and to fulfil the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s poll promise,” he said.
