CHINO HILLS, Calif. (KABC) — New details are emerging about the deadly shooting and kidnapping in Chino Hills, including the nature of the relationship between the victim and suspects, as authorities extend their investigation into Orange County.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department on Friday identified the victim as 60-year-old Shukur Aikebaer. The suspects were identified as 67-year-old Zhengfeng Bo, who was shot and killed by deputies, and Jianquan Bo, 66, who was arrested and remains in custody without bail.
Aikebaer and Zhengfeng knew each other and had a prior working relationship, the sheriff’s department said.
Eyewitness News has obtained business records showing both men listed as having roles together in at least two LLCs. Both companies are involved in lawsuits filed this year, including one lawsuit filed earlier this week.
Zhengfeng Bo’s attorney told Eyewitness News the controversy involves a $20 million apartment complex in Pasadena. According to the attorney, Bo is suing the former managers of the complex, whom he claims are not allowing him to take control of the property.
Bo’s attorney said that although Aikebaer’s name is not listed in either lawsuit, he described him as “a middleman,” saying he believes the victim introduced the suspect to the person with whom he had the dispute.
The deadly incident unfolded Wednesday after the power to Aikebaer’s home went out. When he came out to inspect his electrical panel, he was shot and kidnapped by the suspects.
Investigators are looking into the possibility that the victim’s power was purposely turned off as a ruse to get him outside.
Overnight, the sheriff’s department served a search warrant at an Irvine home, located on Crossover near Benchmark, that the two suspects shared. Authorities say they recovered evidence but did not specifically say what it was.
Christina Louka, a neighbor in the area, described the moments she saw SWAT descend on the home, saying several officers ran into the house with all their guns drawn.
Louka said up to four people were taken into custody, but authorities have not confirmed that. She added the home is generally quiet and said she wasn’t even sure if anybody lived there.
“It was very scary… because generally in Irvine, nothing big like this happens,” she said.
Disturbing scenes unfold in Chino Hills
This all comes after a disturbing sequence of events that started Wednesday night on Monteverde Drive in Chino Hills.
Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a kidnapper who got out of a car and fatally shot an abducted victim in the trunk after chase ended on a street in Chino Hills.
According to investigators, that’s where deputies responded to a report of shots fired and a person yelling for help. The deputies arrived at the scene and spotted Zhengfeng driving a Nissan Altima with Oregon license plates, then attempted a traffic stop.
“The driver failed to yield and a short pursuit began,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Gloria Orejel. The chase ended on nearby Wandering Ridge Drive.
A surveillance camera at that scene captured what happened after deputies pulled over the Nissan.
In the footage, according to the Sheriff’s Department, Jianquan gets out of the car with their arms in the air. Zhengfeng also gets out, walks to the trunk of the vehicle, opens it, and shoots the kidnapping victim inside before deputies open fire.
When deputies moved in, they discovered the victim, now identified as Aikebaer, inside the trunk.
“It is disturbing,” said Orejel. “Apparently there was a victim inside there who had been kidnapped from the previous Monteverde (Drive) address.”
Both the gunman and the kidnapping victim were pronounced dead at the scene. Bo’s attorney told Eyewitness News that Jianquan is a relative of Zhengfeng. The attorney said Jianquan remains in jail.
No deputies were hurt in the shooting.
